Chapter Seven
Ava
After class, Iâm not quick enough getting across the open square between the building wings.
Rita catches up to me. âHey, human!â
Damn. I was hoping this pissy chick might have forgotten about me during a two hour-long physics class, but apparently not.
I turn to face her, flashing the brightest smile I can muster.
âHi. Rita, is it?â
âDonât say my name, trash.â She scowls. âIâll give you a free pass since you obviously know nothing. But you need to learn something fast. Thereâs a natural order around here, and humans donât even get a mention on the list.â
My smile falls along with the weight dragging through my stomach. âLet me guess; youâre at the top?â
âYes, elementals are the nature-ordained supreme beings.â
Far out! Is this girl for real? Well, Iâm pretty proud of being humanânot that I needed to be before todayâand Iâm not going to roll over for some being with a god complex in a world I donât even want to be visiting.
âWhy?â
She straightens and tosses her hair. âElementals are superior in every way. We command the forces of nature, and our emperor rules the world. Learn your place, and stop wasting peopleâs time, like Chengan. Youâre doing him no favors.â
I snort. Itâs not my world. âWhatâs so superior about elementals? And Chen didnât seem to think I was wasting his time.â
Her eyes widen. âChen? Youââ A tremor passes through her upper body. âYou want to know why we are superior? Because we can do things like this.â
She snaps her fingers, and a glassy bubble, the size of my bedroom, forms around us. The grassy square fades to a blur behind the opal-colored barrier, deepening and distorting the clusters of students and buildings behind her. Looking from the glossy magic to her, I gulp at the ugly twist of Ritaâs face.
This is bad.
âYou wanted to know whatâs special about us? Well, I can close you in here and do whatever I like with no one to stop me! Qi is everything here.â
As she steps closer, a ripple behind her catches my attention. A tall guy with a cleanly-shaved face, spiked blond hair and a rigid set to his mouth steps into the bubble. He wears the school uniform, but across his chest hang rows of gold chains, fixed to rings in each shoulder. When he looks from Rita to me, I see an ornate piece of gold jewelry threaded through a piercing in his left lobe and snaking over the top of his ear. Heâs at least a foot taller than me.
My already racing pulse stutters at the sight of him. Thereâs no doubt heâs handsome, but the cold look on his face makes me want to be far, far away from here. From the rigid set of his posture and controlled demeanor to the flashy gold bling, he exudes authority, a tangible presence that makes it hard to breathe.
Rita continues her tirade, apparently unaware of his presence. âYou little bitch! You think you can come in here and do whatever the hell you like as if the rules donât apply to you? Learn this one thing.
